How to Create More Balance

Finding balance in life helps improve your overall health. Why is balance important? You have time to pay attention to your needs both body & mind when you have balance. You can make things a priority such as diet, exercise, mindfulness practices, life obligations, etc.

Do you feel out of balance with one or more of these areas? Balance looks different to everyone & it may take some personal reflection to discover which areas need changes.

Here are a few tips to help you achieve more balance in your life:

  • Make a schedule: Have a plan for your week. Use a planner or calendar to keep track of “to dos” and appointments. This can be either paper, digital or both. Use whatever works best for your lifestyle. Unsure which one is best? Try both! This is a great tool to help with organization, & staying accountable. This is one of the best tools for those that struggle with memory or have ADHD.

  • Meditate/ Mindfulness practice: Shutting off the chaos of life & tuning into ourselves has many positive benefits. Stress and overwhelm lead to mindlessness or running on autopilot also labeled as “survival mode”. This leads to lack of self care and eventually burnout. Check in with yourself frequently with how you are feeling and what you need. Guided meditations with apps are a great place to start. Reflection through journaling is a good way to bring awareness to your thoughts & feelings. This can be paper or digital and there are also apps to help keep track. Other mindfulness activities include walking, yoga, sound bath, hypnosis, grounding & breathing exercises. Many of these help get you out of your head & connect you back into your body.

  • Stay connected with others & balance alone time: Staying connected with others & socializing helps create deep & meaningful connections that are important to human beings. This can help with not feeling isolated and alone. Even with just 1 or 2 other people. Join groups, be part of the community, find people with common values or interests. Humans are wired for connection and belonging. On the other side of the coin is balancing alone time. This is especially important for introverts who recharge their personal battery by spending time alone. (More on this in another article)

  • Self Care activities: These can be entire days or little bits of time here and there if time is limited. Make time for yourself for things you enjoy. Look after your mind & body by creating a calming environment and doing things that help you be your best. It is important we get our own needs met in order for us to have something to give to others. Activities such as reading, taking a bath, getting a massage or self pampering activities are common for relaxing and rejuvenating. Other activities can be more active and give you energy such as yoga, going on a walk, working out, etc. Body nourishment through food can also be considered self care such as having a healthy juice or smoothie, making a healthy meal or treating yourself to a special treat once in a while.
